National Labor Relations Board Regional Director Takes On Big College Football

In what is a sure-to-be appealed decision, yesterday, the National Labor Relations Board Regional Director for Region 13 (governing parts of Illinois and Indiana) has ruled that Grant-in-aid scholarship football players are employees under the National Labor Relations Act and has directed that an election take place to determine whether the employees will be represented by the College Athletes Players' Association.  The University has until April 9, 2014 to file an appeal to the Board.   The Decision is likely to set a precedent for football players at other Division I Universities and could expand beyond football.  The decision is available on the NLRB's website here:  http://www.nlrb.gov/news-outreach/news-story/nlrb-director-region-13-issues-decision-northwestern-university-athletes.  Commentary is available here:  http://www.businessweek.com/news/2014-03-26/northwestern-players-can-become-first-college-union-nlrb-rules and here: http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/eye-on-college-football/24501646/college-athletes-players-association-wins-case-at-nlrb.
