About

Jon J. Sarra is the Assistant Managing Partner at Hinman, Howard & Kattell, LLP and chair of its Trusts, Estates and Wealth Planning Practice Group. He is also a member of the Real Estate and Energy and Environmental Law Practice Groups. Combining his background in these areas with his business law work, Mr. Sarra counsels businesses and individuals in all aspects of estate and tax planning, estate and trust administration, elder law, business succession planning, general business matters, and residential and commercial real estate. Mr. Sarra also counsels foundations and not-for-profit corporations.

Mr. Sarra works with individuals, families, and business owners to devise and implement custom estate plans through wills, trusts, and other planning vehicles. Mr. Sarra also works closely with high net worth individuals to develop state and federal estate tax planning and asset protection strategies. Mr. Sarra regularly works with his clients and their investment advisors, bank trust departments, insurance agents, and accountants to ensure that the plan meets with the long term objectives of the client. Mr. Sarra also counsels both fiduciaries and beneficiaries with respect to the administration of trusts and estates.

Mr. Sarra works with commercial lenders, credit unions, and corporate clients on financing transactions and real property purchases and sales.

Mr. Sarra also serves clients in the real estate brokerage, insurance brokerage, and financial institutions sectors. He regularly works with clients on Realtor licensing issues, the buying and selling of insurance companies, and mortgage lending related to oil and gas rights. He has served as legal counsel to the Greater Binghamton Association of Realtors since 2005. Mr. Sarra works with a number of local and regional foundations in the areas of governance and tax compliance. Mr. Sarra serves as co-chair of the Trusts and Estates Committee of the Broome County Bar Association.

Mr. Sarra is a regular lecturer on the following topics: trust, estate and tax planning; estate planning related to oil and gas law; real estate law related to contracts; oil and gas leasing and mineral conveyances; and mortgage lending related to oil and gas law.

Mr. Sarra serves on the firm’s Executive Committee, and is past chair of its Associate Attorneys Committee. He also serves on the firm’s Marketing and Finance committees. Mr. Sarra was appointed to the Broome County Board of Ethics by the County Executive in 2013 and served until 2016.

He is actively involved in the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce and serves on its Board of Directors as Chairman-Elect. He is the past Chair of the Small Business Council, a current co-chair of the Recognition and Awards Committee, and a past member of the Governmental Affairs Committee.

A native of Endicott, New York, Mr. Sarra is actively involved in the community. He is a past president of the Endicott Performing Arts Committee (EPAC) and a past co-president of the Little Italy Endicott Board. He is a past board member of Catholic Charities of Broome County. He served as Chair of the UHS Foundation and is a board member of the Community Foundation for South Central New York. A graduate of Seton Catholic Central High School, Mr. Sarra continues to give back to his Alma Mater by serving as the Board Chair of The Catholic Schools of Broome County and as a board member of the Catholic Schools of Broome County Foundation. Mr. Sarra also serves as a member of the Hartwick College Planned Giving Advisory Council.
